Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I sell to Gauge rather than on the private market?

Gauge can usually get you more money for your car, while taking the work out of selling it. And if you still want to list it privately to see if you get more, we’re happy to compete with any private buyers as well! Take a look at our reviews to see why so many of your friends and neighbors have chosen to sell their vehicle to Gauge.

You called me saying you wanted to look at my car. What does the process look like?

We’ll verify the condition either at our office or at a partner shop if you are not located in Utah. We just want to make sure we know exactly what we’re buying so we’ll be checking for frame damage, leaks, and anything else we might not have been aware of. Assuming everything checks out, we’ll sign a bill of sale and any applicable state required paperwork. This process takes about 40 minutes. In rare cases where our techs find something unexpected, we will need to confirm our offer first.

If you have the title with you, we’ll pay you on the spot for the car.

If your title is on the way to you, we’ll withhold $250 until we receive the title from you. Once we have the signed title from you, we’ll release the remaining $250.

If you have a loan on your vehicle, we will take care of your loan payoff so that the bank sends us the title directly. Sometimes there is positive equity when you sell your car, in which case we’ll pay you for that on the spot. If you have negative equity at the time of the sale, we’ll collect that from you when we sign paperwork. We accept cash, check, credit card or Venmo. Credit card and Venmo carry a 3% fee.

How much does it cost to sell to Gauge? And am I required to sell you my car if I show it to you?

It costs you nothing! You should never have to pay to sell your car. At no point are you obligated to sell to Gauge until you’ve accepted our offer and signed the car over to us. We work hard to be your highest offer so that it’s a no-brainer to sell it to us.

How will I get paid?

We’ll pay you with a business check, which you can deposit right away.

Who buys my car? And what do you do with my car after you buy it from me?

Gauge buys your car directly from you after you accept our offer. Our offers are sourced from our network of buyers who tell us how much they’ll pay for your vehicle. Our network of buyers consists of all types - companies, dealers, private parties - anyone who is willing to pay the most!

After we buy your car, we manage the transfer of ownership to its new owner, to include transportation, state-required paperwork, and re-titling.

Are you just a broker?

Nope, we buy your vehicle directly from you!

How do you make money?

When you accept our offer, we buy the car directly from you. We then transfer the title to our buyer, who pays us a small fee for finding, inspecting, titling, transporting, and guaranteeing the condition of the car for them.

Can you purchase my vehicle if I have a loan?

Yes! When you accept our offer, we’ll handle the entire loan payoff process, including paperwork and sending in the payoff, and pay you any positive equity on the spot.

What if I have a lease?

Leases are a little more tricky, but we can still purchase your vehicle in most cases! Some leasing companies require you to turn the vehicle in at the originating dealership. Let us know right away if you have a lease so we can work with you on how best to buy out the contract.

How do I know when I’ve received my “highest” offer or when I should hold out for more?

It can be hard to know, given the current volatility in the used car market. We’ll share industry data with you that is typically only available to dealerships so that you feel confident in evaluating private offers, offers from Gauge, or even offers from dealerships, so you have the confidence to know when you’ve received an offer for the most.

What do I need to bring with me when I drop off my car?

All you need to bring is your title* (if you have it), all the keys for the vehicle, your driver’s license, and your registration. If you have a payoff, we’ll help you gather the necessary information.

*Whoever is on the title will need to be present to sign for the paperwork and drop off the vehicle. If your title lists two people, it will depend on if the title says “and” or “or.” For instance if your title lists “John AND Kate,” or John AND/OR Kate, both parties will need to be present. However if your title lists “John OR Kate,” either party can be present.

What cities or states do you serve?

We buy cars all over the United States! If you are located in the Salt Lake City area, we will work with you directly from our office. If you are located outside of the Salt Lake City area, we will work with a partner shop in your area to confirm condition and handle the paperwork.
